WHY IS MY SKIN SO DRY

You may look down at your arms, hands or legs and wonder why is my skin is so dry? Dry skin causes many problems. Cracking, itching, weathered, premature wrinkling, dry, unhealthy looking skin. The skin might not look as plump and healthy as it once did. Typical dry skin comes with a lot of itching. Nobody loves dry or oily skin, we all want normal skin. Skin- why is my skin so dry?

Skin becomes dry for various reasons. First and foremost not drinking enough water will wreak havoc on your skin, remember you need 8-8oz glasses of water a day, more if you are active and in hotter weather.

The weather can playing a role, during winter when the air is dry it will suck the moisture away from skin. Space heaters, central heating, wood burning stoves and fireplaces reduce humidity which produces dry air leaving your skin dry.

The sun also dries out your skin, plus the sun’s UV radiation can penetrate the deeper layers of skin harming collagen and elastin causing wrinkles, dry sagging skin.

Using a harsh soap or detergents can dry out your skin. Sometimes, even your daily use of cosmetics may cause irritation and dry skin problems.

Many skin problems such as Eczema (atopic dermatitis) and Psoriasis a skin condition marked by the rapid buildup of rough, dry dead skin cell make skin dry.

If you have persistent dry skin with flaking you should consult a doctor and find out if there is any underlying skin condition that is causing this. If you have no diseases that are making your skin dry, you need to address the reasons that make your skin dry and adopt habits to correct the dryness such as a quality moisturizer or lotion and  a vitamin E supplement.
